Why you hear it at dusk and dawn
A possum’s night, and where the noises fit in.
Possums sleep in your roof void all day. Around sunset you’ll hear the first stirring above the ceiling.
That heavy walking and the single big thump is it exiting via the roofline to feed. This is the noise most people call us about.
It spends the night in trees and gardens nearby. Possums are territorial and stay close to their den, and your roof is the den.
Before first light it returns through the same entry point and settles in for the day. Then it repeats, every night.
Our fix uses that routine against it: a one-way door lets it leave at dusk as normal, then locks it out for good. No trapping stress, no harm, and with every entry point sealed there’s no way back in.

Peninsula locals rate us 5 stars
Excellent 5.0★★★★★Google reviews from the Mornington PeninsulaWeeks of thumping over our bedroom ceiling. They found the entry point in ten minutes, fitted a one-way door and meshed the whole roofline. Quiet ever since. Lovely to deal with too.
Had a possum in the beach house roof for months. These guys made a custom door for our tin roof on the spot and sealed everything properly. Watched the possum leave that night. Brilliant.
So impressed with how much they knew about possums. Explained the law, checked for a joey before sealing anything, and even put a nesting box in our gum tree. The roof is finally quiet.
Terrible smell in the wall cavity turned out to be a dead possum. They came the next morning, found it, removed it and deodorised everything. Discreet, quick and very fair on price.
Rang at 8am, quoted over the phone by 9 and the job was done two days later. Genuinely nice blokes who clearly love what they do. The one-way door is so neat you can barely see it.
Two other companies wanted to just set traps. These guys explained why that never works, proofed the whole roof and guaranteed it. Six months on and not a single noise. Should have called them first.

Victoria has two common possums, and only one of them is usually your roof problem. Knowing which is which changes the fix.
Common Brushtail Possum
Trichosurus vulpecula- Cat sized, with big pointed ears and a thick black bushy tail
- Dens in tree hollows, and roof voids are a perfect substitute
- Loud: heavy thumps, hisses and deep coughing calls at night
- Territorial. It treats your roof as its permanent home
Common Ringtail Possum
Pseudocheirus peregrinus- Small and quiet, with a thin white tipped tail curled like a ring
- Builds ball shaped nests, called dreys, in dense shrubs and tea tree
- Rarely enters roofs. More likely trimming your roses at night
- Often seen running fence lines and power lines at dusk
What Victorian law says about possums
This is the part most people don’t know, and the reason anyone promising to “take the possum away” is breaking the law and wasting your money.
Protected under the Wildlife Act 1975
Brushtail and ringtail possums are protected native wildlife in Victoria. It’s illegal to harm, poison or kill them, and serious penalties apply.
Released on site, within 50 metres, at dusk
A trapped possum must be released on the same property, within 50 metres of where it was caught, on the evening of the same day. Dumping it in bushland is illegal, and usually fatal for the possum.
It must be done humanely and lawfully
Compliant equipment, correct handling, joeys checked for. Possum control done wrong risks fines and injured animals. Done right, nobody gets hurt and the problem actually ends.
Possum or rat? Listen closely.
The Peninsula’s two most common roof intruders sound completely different once you know what to listen for.
| Possum | Rat or mouse | |
|---|---|---|
| The sound | Heavy thumps and slow walking, like a cat moving above the ceiling | Light, fast scratching and scurrying, often in bursts |
| When | Just after dusk when leaving, and before dawn when returning | On and off all night |
| How many | Usually one. Possums are territorial | Rarely just one. Rodents live in family groups |
| Other signs | Hissing or coughing calls, a strong ammonia smell, a single loud landing thump from a tree | Droppings like dark rice grains, gnawed cables and packaging |
| The fix | One-way door + proofing. That’s us | Baiting + proofing. We’ll point you the right way if it’s rodents |
From first thump to final seal
Inspect
We check the roof void and every metre of roofline, confirm it’s a possum, and find each entry point. Then you get a fixed, obligation free quote.
Fit the one-way door
A custom door fabricated for your roof type goes over the main entry. The possum leaves at dusk as normal and can’t get back in.
Seal everything
Galvanised mesh and proper repairs on every other gap, vent and lifted tile. This is what makes the fix permanent.
Confirm it’s done
We check the roof is quiet, remove the door, seal the final point, and you sleep through the night again.
The Peninsula’s possum people
- Possums are all we do. Not a general pest franchise. A local crew that lives and breathes possum behaviour, roofs and proofing.
- Custom one-way doors, made for your roof. We fabricate our own to suit tile, tin or slate, instead of forcing a one size kit to fit.
- Humane and legal, always. Wildlife Act compliant on every job: no harm, no illegal relocation, joeys checked for before anything is sealed.
- Free quotes, 7 days. Call, text or send the form. We service the whole Peninsula, Frankston to Portsea.
Spring note: from September, mums carry joeys on their backs. We always check the void for young before sealing. No possum gets locked in or left behind.

Straight answers about noises, the law, joeys, smells and what it all costs.
Timing and weight. A possum makes heavy thumps and slow walking sounds just after dusk and again before dawn. One animal, big footsteps. Rats make light, fast scratching in bursts, all through the night. Hissing or deep coughing calls settle it: that’s a brushtail possum.
It depends on your roof type and how many entry points need sealing, so we quote each job properly. The quote is free, fixed and comes with no obligation. Call 0489 303 099 or send the form and you’ll have your price before any work starts. No call out fee, no surprises.
No, and anyone offering to is breaking the law. Possums are protected under Victoria’s Wildlife Act 1975. A trapped possum must be released on the same property, within 50 metres, on the evening it’s caught. Relocated possums usually die in another possum’s territory. The real fix is a one-way door plus proofing, so your roof stops being an option.
It will absolutely try. Your roof was its den, and it stays in the neighbourhood. That’s exactly why we seal every entry point with galvanised mesh and proper repairs as part of the job, not as an optional extra. Once the roof is proofed, it finds a tree instead. Ask us about a nesting box if you’d like to give it one.
Common from September through summer. Brushtail joeys ride on mum’s back, so in most cases they leave together through the one-way door. We always inspect the void for dependent young before sealing anything. No animal gets locked in.
A strong, persistent smell usually means an animal has died in the roof or a wall cavity, often a possum or a rat. We locate it, remove it, deodorise the space, and can sanitise the void and check your insulation afterwards. This is a same week job. Call us on 0489 303 099.
Yes, that’s the whole point of how we work. One-way doors involve no handling at all: the possum leaves on its own schedule and simply can’t re-enter. Where a cage trap is needed, it’s compliant equipment, checked promptly, with the possum released gently on your property at dusk the same day.
We’re local and work 7 days across the whole Peninsula, so it’s usually within a day or two, and often same day for urgent jobs like a possum inside the house or a dead animal smell. Call 0489 303 099 and we’ll tell you exactly when we can be there.
